Charlie Fineman is a former dentist who went through loss of his entire family. He displays a lack of enthusiasm and no longer seeks connection with others. He’s not able to talk about loss and refuses to talk about anyone dying. When Johnson hears of his father death, Charlie tries to change the subject and asks to go get breakfast. He claims that he does not have any memories of his deceased family. Sometimes, he claimed he does not remember and sometimes he says he tries not to remember. Whenever Johnson asks about his former life, he starts throwing and breaking everything in the office. In the movie, he does admit intermittently that he has a problem and need help.
I would diagnosis him with major depressive disorder. He had experienced abnormal depressed mood most of the day for at least 2 weeks according his peers who knew him before. He also experiences abnormal loss of all interest and pleasure most of the day for at least 2 weeks. He probably had quit his job as a dentist, stayed home watching classic movies and playing video games, unable to go on with normal lifestyle. I assumed that he had experienced sleep disturbance such as abnormal insomnia watching movies and playing video games. He also tells Johnson how the last time he saw his wife, he had yelled at her about the kitchen remodeling and how he did not let his children go to Disney land. The also displays abnormal self-reproach or inappropriate guilt. The most important trait of the symptoms is that his behaviors are due to normal bereavement.
